For property insurers looking to evaluate potential earthquake risk, CDS Business Mapping presents the R.I.S.K. Map Mercalli Series. The R.I.S.K. Maps - Mercalli Series is a detailed GIS (geographical information system) data set of the estimated potential seismic activity for the continental US. These maps give the maximum estimated Modified Mercalli Index (MMI) score for anywhere in the continental United States based upon a 475 year return period. These maps can be used to accurately determine a property's susceptibility and exposure to seismic activity on an individual risk or entire book of business quickly and efficiently. These maps can help insurers to avoid devastating losses due to earthquake activity. The data returns the highest anticipated MMI. MMI scores range from 0 - 12. Having a single, simple mapping layer of the entire US makes it easy to evaluate potential earthquake exposure.

PRODUCT COVERAGE: Continental United States

METHODOLOGY:The source data was estimated peak ground acceleration (PGA) values from the USGS at .05 degree increments (About 3 miles). The peak ground acceleration values were then converted into Modified Mercalli Index scores (MMI). Contour lines were then developed at .1 increments. The result is a map layer of regions with a column of MMI scores in 1/10 increments (i.e 8.0, 8.9, etc.).

DATA SOURCE: USGS. Vintage 2002.

Derivative products can also be produced from the data. These include maximum MMI scores by County or ZIP Code, or areas of high Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA). Call CDS for details.
