South
Carolina Beach & Coastal Wind Report
Update |
|
As many of you may know, the SCWHUA expanded the wind pool
area TWICE last year. However, the extended areas are
considered temporary, and may expire in the future. In order
to provide our users with better information in regards to
South Carolina Beach and Coastal Windpool areas, CDS has added
a new feature to its SC Windpool report. If a policy happens
to fall into a windpool zone, the RiskMeter can now alert
users if the policy in question falls into the older,
permanent territory or into the new temporary one. To add this
feature to your account (there is no additional charge),
please contact your account executive at 617.737.4444.

Online Batch
Tool |
|
CDS has developed a tool that will allow underwriters,
agents and brokers to run schedules through the RiskMeter
themselves! CDS can run schedules for clients, but users must
Email us a file, which we run through our software internally,
and then it is sent back to the client. With the batch tool,
users will be able to take their schedules and run policies
through on their own.
How does it work? The only thing users will
need to do is upload a tab delimited file on the batch client
Web site. Once the file is uploaded, it gets processed
automatically and the results are Emailed back. Users can
expect to receive an Email with their results a few hours
later. This tool will definitely help brokers, who require a
quick response. Also, since this process requires no
intervention by CDS, schedules can be run at any time of
day.

Garbage In, Garbage Out |
|
In the past few weeks there have been numerous articles
written about the importance of data quality when it comes
P&C risk modeling.
For carriers in catastrophe prone states, reinsurance can
be the largest expense. The biggest factors in setting these
prices are Probable Maximum Losses (PML's) calculated by the
catastrophe modeling firms. In these calculations several
building characteristics are used, including: year
built, number of stories, roof shape, and more.
Unfortunately, many carriers have not collected and stored
this information on their policies. When calculating PML's, if
the information isn't provided, the modelers must make
assumptions. In these cases, since the companies are looking
for worst case scenarios, they will penalize a carrier that
does not have this information for each policy. If the carrier
had the information, in most cases, this would lower their
PML's and reinsurance costs, because actual information would
be used, as opposed to assumptions. Therefore it makes sense
to append and store this information.
For reinsurers, appending this data can be a
tremendous competitive advantage as well. Uncertainty in the
models has a negative affect on everyone. Even if a customer
or broker does not have this information in their policy file,
it is worthwhile for the reinsurer to collect and pay for this
data. Why? Because by having the data on each policy,
reinsurers can reduce uncertainty, and therefore better price
risk. So theoretically, the reinsurer with this information
can under-price competitors and still know that they will make
a profit because of better information. This will lead to more
business and higher profits for the reinsurer, even though
they are giving lower prices to the carrier!
CDS can return this information in real-time or in a batch
for your current book. You simply provide a file of your
policies and we can append year built, square footage, number
of stories and more! Contact Dan Munson at 617.737.4444
or dmunson@cdsys.com to
discuss your needs. |

New Score
Field Added to Storm Surge Report |
|
Some users have been confused, due to our minimum hurricane
category field in our storm surge report. For example, an area
with a minimum hurricane category of 1 poses a greater risk
than a maximum hurricane category of 5. This is because every
hurricane (category 1-5) would affect an area with a minimum
hurricane category of 1, while an area with a maximum
hurricane value of 5, would only be affected by the strongest
(cat 5 ) storms. And a 0 means no risk (not expected to be
affected by storm surge).
In order to provide our users a clearer picture in regards
to their storm surge risk, we have added a new field called
"Storm Surge Score". The new score field returns a simple 0-5,
where 5 is the highest risk, and 0 is the lowest risk/no risk.
This should be easier for underwriters to understand, as the
higher the number, the higher the risk.
- 5 - Highest Risk
- 4 - High Risk
- 3 - Medium Risk
- 2 - Medium/Low Risk
- 1 - Low Risk
- 0 - Very Low/No Risk

Additional
States Added to Section/Range/Township Search
Feature |
|
Within the next few weeks the RiskMeter Online will be
adding the following states: IN, LA, MI, NE, NV, OH, OK, SD
and UT to its Section/Range/Township (S/R/T) search
feature. After that we will add AL and TX.
If you're not familiar with S/R/T it's a system known
as the Public Land Survey System (PLSS). Basically, it is a
standardized grid used in western states. The section grids
are rectangles approximately 1 mile across. They are used in
many cases by rural insurers or when insuring
agricultural/farm properties. This is the newest way to zero
in on an address, and can be found as one of the tabs on the
search by address page.
Additionally, if you have a list of addresses or
coordinates, we can give you the section/range/township for
each. This is helpful for companies trying to aggregate to
section/range/township. For more information, please contact
customer service at 617.737.4444 |
