Crime Report
2007 Updates are Live |
|
CDS has just updated RiskMeter's Crime Report. This report
is updated yearly and it's based on FBI Uniform Crime
Reporting Statistics (UCR) and demographic clustering to
estimate crime rates for very small areas (census block
groups). The latest update includes new data from 2006. For
users who aren't familiar with this report, all you need to do
is enter an address and it will return 10 crime scores for a
given location.
Many of our customers have found this report to be
extremely helpful when writing commercial and residential
property, by identifying high risk areas prior to instituting
coverage. In addition, carriers who write convenience stores
and fast food restaurants have also used them to evaluate the
risk of an area. For more information or to test drive this
report for two weeks, please contact your account executive at
617.737.4444 |

New Crime
Resource Section |
|
As we mentioned last month, CDS has added a resources
section to RiskMeter. These pages are chock full of
information and statistics on various RiskMeter reports. These
pages can really help you to gain a more detailed
understanding of the RiskMeter.
CDS has just added a
new crime section to our resources page. This section contains
information on how to use our crime report, what fields are
returned, how the scores are calculated and sample reports.
There are also statistics like average score by state,
percentage of each score, urban/suburban/rural averages, etc.
To view the material in this section, you will need to
log into your account. Once you've logged in, you'll notice
several hyperlinks (view address, new account, etc) on the
bottom of the page. All you need to do is click on the second
to last link (glossary/resources) and you'll be taken to a
landing page, which contains the resource link. If you have
any questions about this section, please contact customer
service at 617.737.4444. |

RiskMeter
Adds Maryland Storm Surge |
|
CDS has added Maryland to its growing list of areas
where the RiskMeter Storm Surge report is now available. This
report identifies areas susceptible to coastal flooding from
hurricanes. Virginia will be the next state added, then we
will have the entire Gulf and Atlantic Coasts complete. If you
have any questions or are interested in a free trial, please
contact Daniel Munson at 617.737.4444 or dmunson@cdsys.com

RiskMeter adds e2Value Replacement Cost
Calculators |
|
With more and more insurance companies focusing on
improving underwriting results, we wanted to offer a solution
that would help you to streamline your underwriting process
and maximize your bottom-line. CDS is proud to announce that
it has integrated e2Value's replacement cost calculators into
the RiskMeter Online. This means that within a matter of
seconds, you can now get the potential geographic risk and
replacement cost of a property.
E2Value offers several different replacement cost
calculators, including: residential, farm and ranch,
commercial property and more!
Additional benefits of this partnership include:
- Elimination of duplicate data entry - Since this
program is fully integrated, RiskMeter Online users can get
geographic risk reports and property valuations without
duplicate data entry
- One Account/One Bill - RiskMeter Online users
will receive one bill, which contains the number of
geographic risk reports and property valuations
- One Contact Person - If someone has a question
about billing or how the account is set up, RiskMeter Online
users just need to speak with their account executive
Determining the potential geographic risk and replacement
cost of a property are two crucial steps in the underwriting
process. By integrating e2Value's replacement cost services
into the RiskMeter Online, we can give your organization a
competitive edge by saving you valuable time and money! Call
your account executive at 617.737.4444 for more
information. |

Options for
Customization |
|
Did you know that the RiskMeter is highly configurable?
Many different parameters can be changed with no programming
and at no cost to you. Here is a partial list, but there are
many more:
- The default zoom of the maps can be changed
- The coastal definition can be changed to meet your
specifications
- The distance parameters for coastal measurements can be
changed
- Your rating territories can be used
- For brush you can measure to high, or medium and high
brush
- You can have different medium and high distances
- We can return custom messages
- Different member ID's can have different functionality
- Custom data layers can be used in the system
We will be holding a Webex at 2:00 EST on Tuesday
December 11th. We will review many of the options
available, and participants will have the opportunity have
their questions answered. To sign up for the Webex, go to: http://cdsys.webex.com.

Cut Your
Reinsurance Costs with Better Data |
|
For carriers in catastrophe prone states, reinsurance can
be the largest expense. The biggest factors in setting these
prices are Probable Maximum Losses (PML's) calculated by the
catastrophe modeling firms. In these calculations several
building characteristics are used, including: year
built, number of stories, roof shape, and more.
Unfortunately, many carriers have not collected and stored
this information on their policies. When calculating PML's, if
the information isn't provided, the modelers must make
assumptions. In these cases, since the companies are looking
for worst case scenarios, they will penalize a carrier that
does not have this information for each policy. If the carrier
had the information, in most cases, this would lower their
PML's and reinsurance costs, because actual information would
be used, as opposed to assumptions. Therefore it makes sense
to append and store this information.
For reinsurers, appending this data can be a
tremendous competitive advantage as well. Uncertainty in the
models has a negative affect on everyone. Even if a customer
or broker does not have this information in their policy file,
it is worthwhile for the reinsurer to collect and pay for this
data. Why? Because by having the data on each policy,
reinsurers can reduce uncertainty, and therefore better price
risk. So theoretically, the reinsurer with this information
can under-price competitors and still know that they will make
a profit because of better information. This will lead to more
business and higher profits for the reinsurer, even though
they are giving lower prices to the carrier!
CDS can append this information to new policies using
the RiskMeter Online, or in a batch for your current book.
You simply provide a file of your policies and we can
append year built, square footage, number of stories and more!
Contact Dan Munson at 617.737.4444 or dmunson@cdsys.com to
discuss your needs.
CDS is also looking at collecting this data where public
data doesn't exist. For instance, determining roof shape from
aerial photos, checking for pools using aerial photos, etc.
Call CDS if you are interested in this information.

South
Carolina Windpool Data Call |

first report is due at the department no later than
November 15, 2007 covering the months of January
through September for the current and prior years. The DOI is
looking to monitor exposures within the wind pool eligible
areas and CDS can help.
These windpool areas are available on the RiskMeter Online
for insurers who need this information for renewals, new
business and cancellations. To add this report to your account
or for more information about running a batch of your current
in-force policies, please contact Jamie Munson at

Accurately
Calculating the Distance to Fire Station Can Improve
Profits |
|
The distance to fire station is a rating factor with a very
big impact on premiums that is rarely verified by the carrier.
According to our sources, having a location more than 5
miles from the fire station can add $500-$600 in premium, or
up to 40% on a single policy! So verifying the distance to
fire station and calculating the proper premium, can add
significant money to your overall premiums. If you are not
checking the distance, you may be effectively giving the
insured a 40% discount that he/she is not entitled to!
Solving this problem is easy. The RiskMeter Online can
calculate the distance to the nearest fire station in real
time. The distances returned are routed distances using roads,
not a "crow's fly's" distance. Additionally, if you gave CDS
all of your policies in areas with split fire ratings, CDS can
tell you which ones are more than 5 miles away, and thus
should get the higher class. Think of the profits that you
could make, by simply rating the policies properly, without
having to write one more piece of new business!
