Base Flood Elevations and Flood Certifications

CDS is considering expanding our flood offerings to
include Base Flood Elevations and Flood
Certifications. Base Flood Elevations (BFE's) are
required to write NFIP flood business in many zones.
Flood Certifications are guaranteed flood results. If
you think these two services would be useful to you,
please let us know. Please contact Daniel Munson
at
dmunson@cdsys.com or
617.737.4444 with your opinions and insights.

10 Most Hurricane Vulnerable Areas

According to a recent article in the Insurance
Journal, the ten most vulnerable US mainland areas
to hurricanes are:
- New Orleans, Louisiana
- Lake Okeechobee, Florida
- Florida Keys
- Coastal Mississippi
- Miami/Ft. Lauderdale, Florida
- Galveston/Houston, Texas
- Cape Hatteras, North Carolina
- Eastern Long Island, New York
- Wilmington, North Carolina
- Tampa/St. Petersburg, Florida
Although the 2006 hurricane season is almost over,
it's always a good idea to know your exposure to
coastal and flood risks. In addition, CDS can also tell
you which
policies are eligible for state windpools, and
it's also possible for us to produce custom maps or
take your book of business and run it through our
software in
batch. For more information, please contact
Daniel
Munson at 617.737.4444 or

Tornado Report Updated

CDS has just updated RiskMeter’s Tornado report by
adding data from 2005. This report is now based on
events from 1990 – 2005.
For people who aren’t familiar with this report,
RiskMeter’s tornado model gauges the potential for
tornado damage for any location in the Continental
United States. With this report, users will receive:
Tscale: This is a number between 1 – 100
that represents the frequency of tornado events
from 1990 – 2005. The national average is 8, so any
Tscale number higher than that is more likely to have
a tornado occur.
Tpercentile: This is a percentile score that
compares the address entered to the rest of the
U.S. For example, a score of 80 would mean that it’s
in the top 20% of all areas in the U.S.
Storms per Year: This is the average number
of storms per year for an area. The national
average is one tornado every three years.
Tornado Score: This is the tornado score
based upon the number of tornadoes per year. The
scores can be interpreted as follows:
0 – No Risk – No storms in the area
1 – Low Risk – Less than 1 tornado every
5 years on average
2 – Average Risk – Approximately 1 tornado every 2 -
5 years on average
3 – Elevated Risk – Approximately 1 tornado every 1 -
2 years on average
4 – High Risk – 1-2 tornadoes per year on
average
5 – Extreme Risk – More than 2 two tornadoes per
year on average

Flood Elevation Report Live in 50 States

One lesson learned from the 2005 hurricane season
was that flood risk does not stop at the edge of an A
or V zone. 25% of all flood losses occur outside of
the 100-year flood plain. The new Flood Elevation
report can help you to understand this risk. This
new
report will tell you the distance to the nearest A or V
zone, as well as estimate the height above the flood
zone. From this information, you can identify policies
that are very close to a flood zone, and not much
higher. If you're writing excess flood, this is the
report for you!
RiskMeter’s Flood Elevation report is now live in the
following states: AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DC, DE,
FL, GA, HI, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, ME,
MI, MN, MO,
MS, MT, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NM,
NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA,
VT, WA, WI,
WV, WY. Within the next few weeks, we will go
live
with the remaining states to provide national
coverage.
Currently, RiskMeter’s Flood
Elevation report is the ONLY real-time report that
combines FEMA Flood Zone and elevation data. By
simply typing in an address, users will be able to get:
- FEMA Flood Zone
- Distance to Flood Zone
- Estimated Height Above a Flood Zone
- Estimated Base Flood Elevation (eBFE)
- Elevation at a Location
- Estimated Water Depth in a Flood Zone
- Aerial Photo (Optional)
This report will not only benefit flood insurers by
giving them another tool to evaluate flood risk, but it
will also help agents to sell flood insurance to people
who live outside a flood zone. To get a
complimentary flood elevation trial account,
please contact Daniel
Munson at 617.737.4444 or
