The Indian Ocean tsunami on December 26, 2004 was a wake-up for the United States. In 2005 the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act was passed to expand and improve up national tsunami detection and earthquake monitoring capabilities.
Tsunamis are caused by faulting, landslides or volcanic eruptions. Coastal communities such as California, Oregon and Washington are at risk from tsunamis due to local and distant sources. Local sources like the Cascadia Subduction Zone will only give residents of California, Oregon and Washington a few minutes to find safety, while distant sources give residents more time to evacuate.
RiskMeter has just added California and Washington to its Tsunami report. This report now provides coverage for California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington. By simply typing in an address this report will tell you if a policy falls in or out of a tsunami zone.
