Featured WebEx: EQECAT Earthquake Transition

CDS will be phasing out the old EQECAT (EQE) Earthquake reports and will be replacing them with new, improved reports that return slightly different information.  If you're a user of our EQE Earthquake Reports, it's highly recommended you attend the WebEx event below.

On Tuesday, June 29th at 2PM (EDT), Dan Munson, Founder, RiskMeter Online will unveil our new EQE Earthquake reports.  In order to provide our users with the most up-to-date earthquake data, RiskMeter will leverage new software, which interfaces with EQE's main product line WorldCatEnterprise (WCe).  To learn more about this transition, view sample screen shots or to register for this WebEx, please go
here

Featured WebEx: Advanced Flood

On Tuesday, July 13 at 2PM (EDT), Dan Munson, Founder, RiskMeter Online will lead a WebEx, which will cover our FEMA Flood, Flood Elevation and Storm Surge Reports.  By attending this WebEx, you will learn:

  • How to evaluate flood risks outside of the 100 year flood plain
  • Why the Storm Surge Report is a must in coastal areas, even if you check the flood zone
  • Advantages of Manual Placement
  • Benefits of ordering Manual Flood Determinations
  • Flood Updates: FEMA vs RiskMeter - What are the differences?
  • Why it's important to use up-to-date flood data
  • How to use aerial overlays to assess flood risk
  • How batch processing can help you to quickly identify high risk policies in your books of business

To register for the WebEx, download white papers and view flood statistics, please go here

EQECAT WIND AAL & PML Coming Soon!

CDS is in the process of adding EQECAT's USWIND model to the RiskMeter Online.  Bring the sophistication of catastrophe modeling to your underwriters' desktops in a quick and simple package!  By simply typing in an address, it's possible to get individual wind AAL & PML results for residential and commercial properties from Maine to Texas.  This report will cover 3,100 miles of US coastline and include all states susceptible to North Atlantic Hurricanes, including PR.  This expands on our current EQE offerings, which focus mainly on EQ risks, and compliments the EQ AAL's and PML's we already offer from EQE.  This report is perfect for brokers and underwriters who are looking to analyze their hurricane risk.  For more information, please contact Dan Munson, Founder, RiskMeter Online at 617.737.4444 or dmunson@cdsys.com

Flood Study

According to oft-quoted statistics from FEMA, between 1/4 & 1/3 of all flood losses happen outside of the 100 year flood zone.  This is a large number! To help underwriters to evaluate the risk of flooding near a flood zone, we've created the Flood Elevation report. Besides the FEMA flood zone, this
also provides the user with the distance to the flood zone, and the elevation above or below the BFE.   In addition, over the years we have added a manual placement tool and aerial overlays to provide our users with additional features to assess flood risk.

To make the most of these new tools, however, we decided it would be very helpful if we had answers to the following important questions.

  • How far away from flood zones do claims occur, and with what frequency?
  • What elevation differences are needed to ensure safety?
  • What percentage of flood claims are in flood zones?

With this in mind, we are looking for customers who would like to share claims data with us, and in turn, we would share the results with the participants and the group.  What we are looking for are:

  • Addresses of claims
  • Amount of claims (optional)
  • Flood Zone you had assigned to the policy

We will only share aggregate statistics with the group.  No policy level information will be shared.  In addition, we are willing to sign a NDA to this effect.

If you would like to participate, please contact Dan Munson, Founder, RiskMeter Online at
dmunson@cdsys.com or speak with your account representative at 617.737..4444

KY Tax Code Improvements

CDS has just added new features to RiskMeter's KY Tax Reports.  These features have to do with effective dates and dealing with certain cities where multiple codes apply.  The effective date logic allows companies to assign the proper codes based upon a certain policy date.  As for multiple codes, there are certain cities where a tax is due to both the city and county.  These additions should make it even easier for RiskMeter users to assign policies to the correct tax jurisdictions.  For more information, please speak with an account executive at 617.737.4444

Virtual MGA WebEx Recording

On Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at 2PM (EDT) Virtual MGA and RiskMeter Online unveiled Virtual MGA's integration of
RiskMeter into its risk placement platform.  Through this partnership, it's now possible to pre-fill and validate natural hazard risk data directly into the rating engine component of Virtual MGA's Web-based, risk placement platform.  If you couldn't attend this WebEx, we've recorded it so you may view it at your convenience!  To request a recording of this WebEx, please contact Val Feeney at 617.737.4444 or
vfeeney@cdsys.com and he will send you a link.

Sinkhole Update: Over 12,000 Sinkholes in  Clearinghouse

This winter has been a very active one for sinkhole claims.  We have seen unprecedented interest in finding ways toidentify sinkhole prone areas and to mitigate sinkhole claims. RiskMeter continues to make important progress in this area. Our goal is to have the most complete sinkhole database for Florida. Currently, we are in the process of expanding our sinkhole clearinghouse, by adding data from county clerks' offices and other sources from the Florida counties most affected. We have added 8,500 confirmed sinkholes to our clearinghouse in the past month by incorporating this data, bringing the total number of sinkholes in our database to over 12,000!

RiskMeter users can opt-in to use this data if they wish, or they can also choose not to use it. Additionally, included in these records are sinkhole claims by participating carriers, which are not available anywhere else. If you are interested in the Sinkhole Clearinghouse please contact Dan Munson at 617.737.4444 or
dmunson@cdsys.com

LA Storm Surge Update

CDS has recently completed new storm surge data for Eastern Louisiana, including the New Orleans Metro area. This CDS
derived data replaces the storm surge data that CDS originally received from the State of Louisiana Office of Emergency
Management.  CDS used elevation, levee, and SLOSH data to painstakingly map this area.  Levees around New Orleans are
its only defense and can be easily flooded from even the smallest hurricane without them.  Our new maps take the levees into account.  We were able to obtain maps showing the levee heights and used these to factor the levees into the surge modeling.  That being said, our new maps still show that New Orleans would be flooded by a strong Cat2 hurricane.  These maps will be available online within the next week.  Now all of CDS's storm surge data is consistent and engineered through CDS's proprietary methods from TX to ME.

FEMA Flood Map Updates

New developments, topology and changes in the environment, all have an effect on how areas flood.  RiskMeter's number
one priority is to give its users access to the best and most up-to-date flood data.  That's why our flood information
is refreshed on a monthly basis.  During the course of the year FEMA will issue roughly 12,000-18,000 map revisions,
which will be digitally updated on the RiskMeter Online.  To see our latest map revisions, click
here.

Why Use RiskMeter to Check for Flood Zones?
There are many things an insurer should know about flood maps.  First, FEMA does not have digital copies of all of their
flood maps.  We do.  In addition, many of the digital GIS maps shown on FEMA's web site are out of date. With their
flood mapping program, much of the data referred to is "Q3 data", which is more than 10 years old!  So be careful!  Since FEMA issues so many updates during the course of the year, using data that is outdated can be very risky to use for underwriting and pricing purposes.  Secondly, with RiskMeter's flood reports a determination is made for you, so there's no map interpretation required.  Also, with our mapping technology, we allow you to overlay flood maps (and other hazards) right on top of the aerial photo.  For larger risks, this feature can help you to understand what parts of the facility or which buildings are in flood zones.

How Batch Processing Can Help
If an area that you write business in has been updated, an easy way to check your flood zone exposure for a book of
business is by leveraging our Online Batch feature.  For those of you who aren't familiar with the RiskMeter Online Batch
(ROB) service, it allows users to run multiple addresses or schedules, without the need to type in each address individually.  RiskMeter's batch feature enables users to upload a file and get the results emailed back in spreadsheet form anytime, anywhere.
